Spray Foam Insulation – High R-Value, Low Maintenance Insulation

Spray foam insulation is the most powerful, energy-efficient and cost-effective form of insulation available. It has the highest R-value per inch allowing it to reduce air leakage, creating a custom air tight envelope which saves you money on heating and cooling. Spray foam also holds its shape and is able to fill spaces, crevices and voids that are often left uninsulated like electrical boxes and light fixtures. It is the perfect insulation for new construction projects, attics, crawl spaces and rim joists.

It is a great choice for homes in the California area because of the new energy efficiency standards. The CEC requires that the spray foam insulation installed in homes meet a minimum standard known as High-Quality Insulation Installation (QII). QII inspections are conducted by a third party called a HERS Rater who looks at the insulated framing of the home and makes sure it is preventing thermal bridging that could cause a loss of energy efficiency.

Understanding Spray Foam Insulation: How It Works and Why It Matters

The two chemicals in spray foam, polyurethane and isocyanate are strong irritants that can cause damage to the eyes, respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts when they come into contact with your skin or lungs. This is why it is important to use the proper equipment when installing the spray foam like gloves, goggles, and a breathing apparatus. Spray foam will off-gas for a short time after it has been installed, usually 24 hours.

Spray foam is a long-lasting insulation and doesn’t require much maintenance. It is resistant to moisture, the weather and most other conditions that would affect other types of insulation. It only needs to be inspected about every five years to make sure it is performing as intended.
